I’ve NEVER Regretted Making The Tough Decision
Holding on to things because of the fear of decision making has cost me millions.
Have you ever had an employee, agency, friend, or even loved one that you’ve held onto for too long? Why? Because you were scared of the tough conversation. Or because you were scared to hurt feelings?
I’m the exact same way. I hate confrontation, but our gut is right 95% of the time. Every time I’ve made a tough decision with Frost Buddy, mostly firing quick, or making a crisis decision, it has always been I decision that I did not regret.
If you have a difficult decision, just make it and you will have a much better headspace.
Worry about your business, not peoples’ feelings.
If you spend your time in business worrying about feelings, you will have anxiety and depression faster than you can imagine. Everyone is doing things in their own best self interest, and they will play the emotions card each time.
If you let emotions get in the way, you will have so many problems. You will hold onto agencies too long and let them drain money from the company. While they are draining thousands, you could have made the switch, and started generating profit earlier. If you hold onto an employee too long, you will get subpar work for too long. You will delay making the switch to find a rockstar employee in that spot to turn the business around in that area. by holding on, you will have too much unwanted stress for their lackings. You will feel more anxious because deep down you know you shouldn’t keep them.
Let me help you with some simple tips so you don’t do this or get caught in a situation.
#1. DO NOT Sign Contracts Unless Absolutely Necessary
If you have a contract, you are locked in. Their work can suck and you are trapped. You are a startup with no money. If you are in a 12 month contract and you can’t leave it, you don’t want on the hook for $300k.
People want contracts so that they are protected, but you need the protection. Here’s what you can do.
Read every line. Look at the “opt out” section to see how many days it is. If not less than 60, run.
Look at renewal sections. Don’t ever sign auto-renews. If they can’t take it out, they are scummy and aren’t confident in good work.
Try to keep term contracts at 4-6 months if possible. Things change in that timeframe and you may need to change.
#2. Communicate Expectations Early & Often
Most issues in life are from unspoken expectations.
Lay out key metrics your agency or employee needs to hit on a weekly / monthly basis. This way, if they suck, you and they both know.
Meet weekly, set an agenda, & be brutally honest in debate. It’s great for both of you.
Give them a short leash to fix issues. If they aren’t performing, let them know what needs fixed. Give them a short, short timeline to fix it. Then you can feel confident in going a different direction!
Communication will help give you confidence in decision making.
#3. Trust Your Gut & Make Quick Decisions. Learn After.
Here’s the deal. You know your business. You know your life. Your gut is connected to your central nervous system. It’s not a “gut feeling” for no reason. So if you feel something is wrong, it’s wrong so make the fix.
Odds are you may have an issue in your business or life right now that you’ve been dragging out as opposed to addressing it and making the decision. I hope this newsletter can encourage you to go with your gut and make the decision that needs to be made!
As a CEO, that’s our job. That’s the tough job. Make the decision and live with it.
