How 1 Video Made Me $210K In A Day | No Ad Spend

Why You Should Go All In On Tik Tok

The largest topic in the DTC world right now is most definitely Tik Tok! Every business owner big or small is trying to figure out how to grow on Tik Tok. It’s honestly just like Instagram however many years ago. Soo how do we do it? How do you go viral? Is it even worth it?

Back in October 2021, Frost Buddy went viral on Tik Tok with 20M views 🤯 So I’m here to tell you what that was like, and what everyone asks….Did it actually transition to sales??

First off, you’re probably wondering what video went viral? And how?

This is the one! Just me at my desk in my apartment explaining how the Universal works. You can click it and see the entire thing :)

I posted this at 3pm. I get out of a class at 6pm. My buddy calls me to tell me I’m at 3M views 😂 I couldn’t even believe it because we only had 2000 followers at the time. So sure enough, we had 3M views. We ended up going live on Tik Tok that night and I think I answered questions for 3 hours straight while people were purchasing at rapid pace. Our largest day ever at the time was $80k on Black Friday. We passed $120K the first day I went viral 🤩 all organically because of this video… What happened next is what made me go all in on Tik Tok!

I woke up at 8am only to see our site at $50K 😳 Yes, I couldn’t believe my eyes. I refreshed Shopify at least 10 times to make sure. By this time the video probably added another 5-8M views and was still going strong. I couldn’t comment fast enough to keep the engagement going. We broke $120K by noon that day and ended up doing a little over $210K for that day….ALL BECAUSE OF ONE STUPID VIDEO 😂

For me, the craziest part of the entire thing was the fact that the comments were 95% extremely positive. People LOVED the product idea, they loved how passionate I was, and they always love a good underdog story! But if you’re here, I know you’re like “Yeah great story, but how do I do this??”

Let Me Break This Video Down Into 3 Parts For Your Business

1. How Did It Go Super Viral

Ever read the book “Contagious: Why Things Catch On” ? If not, read it if you want to go viral! It couldn’t be more spot on.

Social Currency

Ever been scrolling on Tik Tok and seen a video with 100K likes and stopped strictly because of that? Or see a product that you have and go comment “I have one and it’s amazing”. Well that’s exactly what happens when a video catches traction. And it goes and goes and goes. People love to tell others about their personal experiences. Maybe they share the video with a friend or family member. My product and video had that social currency.

Triggers

Let’s be real. In the content world, triggers are everything. How can we hook them in the first 3 seconds? I take a very simple approach. Let commenters do the work! This went viral in part because of the trigger. I started with a response to some other video’s comment and I said “I’ll gladly show you how it fits every can, and I’ll even toss in a bottle too”. BOOM! Just like that, it was the greatest grabber in the world. I study hooks ALL THE TIME!! It’s a fast paced world so study it.

Emotion

This one is simple. You own your business and you know your product better than anyone. People could feel my passion and they could feel how genuine I was with the product. They are tired of big corporate. Be you and they will feel it and love it!

Practical Value

To go viral, there must be some practical value. To some, entertainment can serve as that value. For business, it’s most times the product. My product serves the customer a large value compared to competitors. It has that “wow” factor in practicality. The book talks about the blender that played videos blending up marbles. Talk about value!

The 2 factors my video did not really have all that much were Public & Stories. The book goes into detail with that, but when you’re making content, check off these boxes if you want a viral video!

2. I Thought Tik Tok Doesn’t Convert To Sales?

I HATE THIS COMMENT MORE THAN ANYTHING!! Your Tik Toks don’t convert to sales because you don’t have conversions in mind when you make it. It’s simple! I make some Tik Toks that I know could go viral, but they won’t generate any sales at all because they don’t drive home the sale of the product. It could be funny, a trend, etc. This video was straight up an ad, and it generated over $350K worth of sales.

That means people watched the video, either clicked to my profile and clicked the website link, or went to Google, and typed in frostbuddy.com, found what they wanted, and purchased.

Think about that path to purchase. It’s a lot, but if people want your product, they will find the way!

Not to mention that Tik Tok is not all about sales. It’s about awareness. And the more people that I can organically get to know me or get to frostbuddy.com is more people that enter my retargeting funnel.

If someone tells you Tik Tok doesn’t convert, then show them this please.

3. How Can A Viral Video Change Your Business FOREVER?

Was this just a one hit wonder for Frost Buddy that gave us a huge spike and then life went back to normal?

The short answer is no. Since going viral, here’s a list of things that changed because of the video…

  • Went from 2K followers to 215K followers in 5 days

  • We had over 50K add to carts which all went into retargeting funnel (doubled daily sales the rest of October)

  • Dick’s Sporting Goods knew us from Tik Tok

  • Walmart buyers knew us from Tik Tok

  • TJ Maxx buyers knew us from Tik Tok

  • Scheels Tik Tok account told us to contact the buyers

  • The viral video has been our #1 ad on every platform since

  • 14 of my best 20 ad creatives in 2022 have been Tik Toks

  • Up to 322K followers with a million view video almost every week

  • Used Tik Tok to launch new Modelo product (1200 units sold in 5 days organically)

  • I get noticed at every trade show as “the tik tok guy”

  • I have an army of tik tok fans that comment and battle for me on every video

The goal now is to get to 1M+ followers and just keep it going! I’m shutting off all Tik Tok ads because I get way more conversions organically than ads produce.

Moral of the story - Go all in on Tik Tok!!

You never know what video might change your entire company. There are certainly some strategies that will help give your videos a better chance, but you have to be consistent with your posting and find your niche.

I still have videos that flop with only 1000 views, but I leave them up and try to learn from them. Tik Tok has so many uses for businesses in 2022 so take advantage.

As always, reach out to me if you have any questions at all. I love talking Tik Tok and love seeing people blow up on the app.
